Eat, Sleep, Lift, Repeat
In February 2020, I began a journey of self betterment and wellbeing, both mentally and physically, in pursuit of a more positive and happy life. To that end, I started weightlifting, exercising more and focusing on changing my outlook on things. It didn't take long to get bitten by the bug of the endorphin rush that comes from doing so, and now, 2 years on, it has reaffirmed the importance of showing up and committing to change and hard work. Along with a renewed positive and dedicated mindset, it also served to refresh my passion for design and before I knew it I was creating designs rooted in an exercise theme alongside the physical act of working out. This design was one of the first concepts I came up with, and it also allowed me to create a piece which played around with typography and typeface - outside of the small amount I had done in the graphic design Jobs I completed in the past - where the typeface was more about the effectiveness of the font in relation to the logo/design rather than the manipulation of it.
For this design (which was intended originally as a teeshirt/vest design for wearing to the gym) I first chose an impactful font, then once happy with the layout, I rasterised the font and began to edit sections like the bite marks out of the word "Eat" using the eraser and draw additional elements such as the barbell above the word "Lift". I also layered the same font and using the expand selection tool cut out the shape of the "Z's" from the word "Sleep" to striking effect. Finally, using the gradient tool and applying layer blending I was able to apply a vibrant colour blend to the typeface. These all contributed to bringing the design to life and elevating it from a slogan using basic font to a unique and vibrant finished design.
